Painting the Kitchen

We live in a charming, rustic cottage (i.e, it needs a lot of work).  The kitchen is a dark cave.  Part of the reason the kitchen is dark is that it's on the north side of the house and the ceiling in the kitchen is 7 feet.

I  bought a a small sample of paint yesterday and painted to the left of the window.  I think I like it!

I've been thinking about painting the kitchen for a long time and have decided to paint the walls and the cupboards.  I feel a need to lighten and brighten this year.

I submitted the following question to Betsy Speert's Blog:

Dear Betsy,
We live in a rustic cottage and the kitchen is a dark cave.  I'd like to paint the walls and cabinets white.  Do you have a favorite paint and color for painting kitchens?

Betsy had some excellent ideas.  To see what paint and color Betsy recommended, go to Betsy Speert's Blog.   You'll be inspired by her blog and answers to other decorating questions.

Do you think I should paint my cabinets and walls white?

I always love a good change up and painting is the way to go in my opinion! Go for it, can't wait to see it when it's done!

Paint is such a wonderful thing. I would love to paint my cabinets, but it's just not going to happen so I have to find other ways to lighten my kitchen.

Good luck with yours!

Looks like a big job but no doubt you are up to the challenge. I think white is the way to go. Clean and neutral. Are you going to keep the same hinges? When I painted my cabinets I had to replace nasty, dirty, tarnished gold hinges. I got contractor packs at our Menard's so it wasn't too pricey. Just wondering...good luck with whatever you decide!

Your kitchen has so much potential, I can't wait to see it all bright and made over! :)
Thanks for the comment on the dresser pulls- yes, I did help design them, but we pretty much kept everything like the logo on my blog. I just added the webpage info on the tags in case customers want it. They came pre punched which is also really nice! I can't remember the company we ordered from, Megan did all the leg work. But the turn around was very fast!

I think you would love your kitchen painted over with white cabs..maybe grey cabs on the bottom to go with countertops. Can't wait to see what Betsy thinks.

I think you would add a lot of cheer with a brighter palette. Looking forward to seeing it's transformation.
